Storied Lives: The Role of Narrative in Physician Assistant Education, Professional Identity Formation, and Advocacy for the PA profession
Leslie St. Jacques, CCPA
Stories permeate our lives, provide meaning and give us guidance, in both our personal and professional lives. This short talk will focus on the influence and use of stories in teaching and learning, clinical practice and advocacy. From case histories to discharge summaries and performance reviews, stories shape our understandings of the people we care for, our work, our profession and our professional identity. The stories that we tell have the power of construction and influence, shaping ways of seeing and often perpetuating stereotypes. We will use a critical lens to explore the positive and negative power of narrative in clinical settings, and its potential uses for advocacy for our patients and for our profession."
